2nd Poverty Mapping Workshop

2nd Poverty Mapping Workshop

This small technical workshop followed from the 1st Poverty Mapping workshop conducted at Ghana, at which some methods to tease out complexities of how people gain from water use in agricultural system were determined. This follow up workshop took these methods of analysis with respect to more specific data from two river basins - Sao Francisco and Mekong.

The workshop started with a presentation from Simon detailing aim and scope of the workshop and expected outcome, which is an analytical methodology for CPWF for analysing poverty related to water. This followed a range of presentations discussing: the indicator approach to water poverty (the water poverty index), poverty and natural resources, measurable links between water and poverty, and poverty mapping. Jeremy and Jorge detailed Bayesian modelling and its advantages. Eric explained Poverty Mapping in the Mekong basin using Bayesian Modelling.

For the next two days, three groups were formed. One group worked with the Mekong data and the other two used Sao Francisco data. Each group came up with a Bayesian network which were further discussed and modified. Part of the time was spent learning GeNIe, the Bayesian Modelling Software.  Last day, Eric gave a quick overview of mapping outputs from GeNIe.

It was concluded that the Bayesian methdology offer great potential in analysising links between water and livelihoods. Further work is required to complete mapping GeNIe outputs.
